Fruit trees: buy online here
If you feel that you would like to eat something from your own garden or allotment, but don't have masses of time or skill, then growing fruit is the way to go. It's definitely a growing trend, and more and more people want something edible from their little patch of green. Soft fruit, fruit trees and nut trees are relatively easy to grow, and they live for many years.
Having trained at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Co Cork, I worked for several years as a professional chef. In fact, it was cooking, and Ballymaloe, that first got me interested in gardening. If you like eating, it only makes sense that you should like cooking. And if you like cooking, you should like gardening and foraging too (and hunting and fishing, though I haven't got there yet). So it's a logical step that in setting up dyg we wanted to have a really wide range of tasty, edible plants. We stock varieties of Gooseberries, Raspberries, Currants, Blueberries, Huckleberries and Ugni fruit. Ugni fruit? A small but exceptionally tasty fruit on an easy-on-the-eye evergreen shrub. A talking point, and a very delicious one at that. We also stock chestnuts, hazelnuts and walnuts, apples and pears, plums, peaches, greengages and cherries. And we also have plants which are mainly known for being ornamental which have an edible or culinary side to them: elder, rose (for hips), amelanchier (for berries), a variety of bamboo traditionally used for steaming vegetables in. And finally, we have perennial vegetables and fruit such as Jerusalem artichoke, globe artichoke, asparagus, sea kale and rhubarb: all tasty, easy to grow and long lasting...... no need to sow every year. (See the list below or check them out in detail here). Please contact us if there is anything you want us to source for you.
Bear in mind that the fruit trees and bushes sometimes for sale in the supermarkets are not a comparable product: they are produced on a vast scale, and the same varieties are sold across Europe, regardless of the huge variation in climate and weather conditions.
