Coastal astelia

An evergreen grass-like plant with metallic, silver-green leaves. It has something in common with the better-known Phormium (New Zealand flax), but this plant is best known for its silver foliage and matt texture. Rarely flowers in Ireland, but flowers are white on a tall spike, followed by purple berries on female plants. It's a great architectural plant, creating interest year-round. Dislikes wet or water-logged soil and suitable too for container gardening. Perfect for seaside gardens, but protect from harsh winter winds. Can be grown in sun or shade.  3 litre pot.
