Tree staking advice
- Remember not to drive the stake through any main roots of the plant. You can position the stake and even drive it into the hole before planting the tree if necessary.
- Only stake the tree long enough for it to be able stand on its own. Remove after one to two years - either cut it at the base or pull it out.
- Stakes should not be too tight - there should be room for the tree to sway in the wind. Check tree stakes regularly, as trees grow, and damage is often caused to the tree from ties that are too tight.
- Stakes should not be too loose - the tree should not rub against the stakes.
- Stakes should be buried at least 1.5 feet underground to provide ample support.

- Note position of block, which keeps tree away from the stake and prevents rubbing
- On smaller half-standard sized trees, sometimes the bamboo stake which comes with the plant will suffice.
- In areas with high pedestrian traffic, a stake is a good idea as it protects the tree from passing hands or vandalism.
