Matteuccia struthiopteris
Ostrich fern, Shuttlecock fern
Price: €3.95
This deciduous fern is particularly elegant in spring when it sends out pretty (and edible) 'fiddleheads', which are its unfurling fronds. Its tight, vertical shape gives it its common name, and it grows best in moist, damp or even wet soil, ideally adjacent to a pond or stream. It prefers light or dappled shade. Cut down brown fronds at the end of the year if desired. Ideal in groups with other damp, shade-loving plants. Spreads to form multiple crowns. Height: 7to 150 cms. Young plants in a small 9cms pot.
